Frequently asked questions about the Deutschland-Ticket

Find out everything you need to know about the Deutschland-Ticket here. The most important questions and answers at a glance.

  • What is the Deutschland-Ticket?

The Deutschland-Ticket, also known as the D-Ticket or 49-Euro Ticket, allows you to travel nationwide on local public transport (IRE, RE/RB, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus). It is designed to facilitate access to buses and trains, promote climate protection and reduce the financial burden on citizens. The D-Ticket is offered in the form of a monthly cancellable subscription to support the switch to public transport.

  • What does the Deutschland-Ticket cost?

The Deutschland-Ticket is available for 49 euros per month. Some transport associations offer discounts for the first few months. The HVV offers the Deutschland-Ticket with Hamburg's social discount for as little as 19 euros, school pupils also pay only 19 euros and trainees pay 29 euros as part of the BonusTicket. Check with your local transport authority for local offers and discounts. Since it doesn't matter where you buy the Deutschland-Ticket, a little research can be worthwhile.

  • How and where can I buy the Deutschland-Ticket?

You can purchase the D-Ticket from any of the German associations and transport companies either online or, in some cases, at the customer centres. Here takes you directly to the Deutsche Bahn booking process. The Deutschland-Ticket is available as a digital mobile phone ticket or as a chip card. Until your chip card is issued, you will receive a temporary paper ticket. As the Deutschland-Ticket (49 Euro ticket) is personal, you must be able to prove your identity with an identity document in the event of a check.

  • On which means of transport is the Deutschland-Ticket valid?

The Deutschland-Ticket is valid throughout Germany in all associations and local transport companies. This includes buses, trams, underground trains, suburban trains, Interregio Express trains, regional trains, regional express trains and some ferries. The ticket is not valid on long-distance services operated by Deutsche Bahn, i.e. on ICE, IC, EC trains and not on the RE lines of DB Fernverkehr AG. Flixtrain and Flixbus are also excluded. However, there are some exceptions. The Deutschland-Ticket is also not valid for means of transport that are mainly operated for tourist or historical purposes, such as excursion trips with historical steam locomotives. In some cases, however, use is possible for holders of the Deutschlandticket for an additional charge.

  • How long is my Deutschland-Ticket valid?

The Deutschland-Ticket is valid for exactly one month. It starts at 0 o'clock on the first day of the month and ends at 0 o'clock on the last day of the month. If you bought the Deutschland-Ticket during the current month, it is valid until the end of the last day of the current month, but not later than 3 a.m. on the following day. The ticket is a subscription and is automatically renewed if you do not cancel it by the 10th of the last month.

  • Can I travel in 1st class with the Deutschland-Ticket?

The Deutschland-Ticket is essentially a 2nd class ticket. However, some transport associations, such as the VVS, offer an upgrade to 1st class for 37.50 euros per month, limited to their region.

  • Can I take my dog or bicycle with me on the Deutschland-Ticket?

No, dogs or bicycles cannot be taken along free of charge with the Deutschland-Ticket. Some transport associations offer upgrades in the form of additional tickets. However, these are only valid in the respective transport association area. As a rule, bicycles may not be taken on DB trains free of charge. An extra ticket currently costing 6 euros must be purchased. In some federal states, however, there are exceptions, such as in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, where you can take your bicycle on local trains free of charge from 9 a.m. Monday to Friday and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

  • Can I take my child or another person with me on the Deutschland-Ticket?

Yes, children up to 6 years of age can travel free of charge, children over 6 years of age cannot. Special transport regulations in your existing Abo-Ticket are not taken over when you buy the Deutschland-Ticket. Depending on the network, however, there may be different regulations. In the VVS, for example, it is possible to transfer the ticket to another person for 9.90 euros per month. However, this is only valid within the VVS.

  • Is the Deutschland-Ticket also available to foreign tourists?

Yes, the Deutschland-Ticket can also be purchased and used by foreign tourists who do not reside in Germany. Tourists can use it to explore their holiday region in Germany easily and inexpensively. The subscription runs for one year, but can be cancelled monthly or on the 10th.
